The computer industry is one of the fastest growing segments of our economy and that growth promises to continue well into the next century.

To keep a competitive edge, industry and commerce should continue for making innovative scientific and engineering advances together with develop excellent quality products and solutions. Currently, you will find there’s demand for a prepared work force with the scientific and technical training necessary to perform effectively on the job. Now is the time to plan your future in computing.

Careers in Computer Science and Computer Engineering

Computer Science is one of the fastest growing job fields. Computer science offers a foundation that permits graduates to adapt to new technologies and new ideas. Computer science is the development, practice and testing of modern computer technology. A computer science degree is an interdisciplinary program that combines elements of computer technology with business. Completing a bachelor’s degree in computer science can open the door to a wide variety of career paths in both technology and business.

The work of computer scientists falls into three categories: a) designing and building software; b) developing effective ways to solve computing problems, such as storing information in databases, sending data over networks or providing new approaches to security problems; and c) devising new and better ways of using computers and addressing particular challenges in areas such as robotics, computer vision, or digital forensics (although these specializations are not available in all computer science programs). Most computer science programs require some mathematical background.

Computer Programmer

Computer programmers develop the computer language for different software applications. They are usually responsible for creating software and testing it for bugs.

Computer Scientist

Computer scientists work with the latest technology to analyze problems and identify solutions. They often work together with engineers to solve technological problems.

Statistician

Statisticians use mathematics to analyze data. They often work with market researchers to improve market strategies and forecasts.

Market Researcher

Market researchers compile and analyze consumer preferences to improve marketing methods. They might work with Internet studies or surveys.

Risk Analyst

Risk analysts project potential risk factors for insurance companies. They usually work in conjunction with the insurance underwriting team to project consumer or business insurance premiums.

The Bachelor of Computer Science, (abbreviated BCompSc or BCS), is a type of bachelor’s degree, usually awarded after three or more years of collegiate study in computer science. In general Computer Science degrees emphasize the mathematical and theoretical foundations of computing, rather than teaching specific technologies that may quickly become outdated.

A Bachelor of Computer Science degree is normally required in order to work in the field of software development.

The same core curriculum may, depending on the school, result in other degrees, including:

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Computer Science

Bachelor of Mathematics in Computer Science

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BScIT)

Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Computer Science

Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Computer Science) – BSE (CS)

Bachelor of Computer Security in Computer Science

Bachelor of Computing in Computer Science

Bachelor of Science (BSc or BS) in Computer Science (BSc CS or BSCS)

In many post-secondary institutions, an Honours Bachelor of Computer Science degree has been introduced as an upgrade to the regular Bachelor’s program. They usually require four years of studies instead of three.
